Best Vinyl of 2017

Every December,  magazines, websites, music bloggers, "social mediaites", and music fans all convalesce around one thing; "Best Of Lists". Blind Tiger Record Club is no different. Just like all of you that gather around tables at the local coffee shop or bars to discuss the best music of 2017, we have been laboring and debating our picks as well. So, without further ado, we are very excited to present the "Blind Tiger Record Club Best Vinyl of 2017"

December 2017 Alternative ROTM - Dirty Heads - Swim Team

Swim Team is the sixth studio album from Huntington Beach, California-based Dirty Heads. The guest list of collaborators is diverse and includes 311 guitarist and singer Nick Hexum, Rome (Sublime w/Rome) and writing/production duo HEAVY(Andrew McMahon). What really makes this album stand out isn't the collaborations (as good as they are), but the move towards a more commercial mainstream sound. It's still heavily infused by a unique mixture of reggae, rap, alternative rock and pop, but blended together in a production style that makes it more digestible for a larger audience. "Vacation" charted top 15 this fall at alternative format radio as a result.

December 2017 Singer/Songwriter ROTM - Chris Stapleton - From A Room: Volume 2

From A Room: Volume 2 was a highly-anticipated album for the BTRC staff. Fast fans of From A Room: Volume 1 and Stapleton’s debut Traveller, we knew the record was going to be something special, once again. Chris Stapleton was already an award-winning songwriter working in Nashville prior to his infamous performance at the 2015 CMA’s with Justin Timberlake. In fact, over 150 of his songs have been cut by other artist including six Country number ones.

December 2017 Rock ROTM - U2 - Songs of Experience

Songs of Experience is the second act to a theme that was initiated with 2014’s Songs of Innocence. The album was described as a “kind of musical autobiography... that reflected influences 70’s rock and punk to early 80’s electronica and soul”.  Songs of Experience picks up where Innocence left off.  Experience is more adult themed taking on a more of a “lessons learned” story-type.

November 2017 Singer/Songwriter ROTM - Robert Plant - Carry Fire

November 2017 Singer/Songwriter ROTM - Robert Plant - Carry Fire

Carry Fire is Plant's first album in over a decade where he's retained the same players and support crew. Recorded once again with the Sensational Space Shifters, who backed him on 2014’s Lullaby and...The Ceaseless Roar. Some of the guitar tones, mystical components and Robert’s vocals (as well as the open space on the tracks) are definitely reminiscent of Led Zeppelin.  Carry Fire is an excellent record and you’ll be glad to hear Plant’s voice sitting on top of such great songs.

November 2017 Rock ROTM - Matt Mays - Once Upon A Hell of a Time

For all of you that have opined over the last few years that there aren’t enough good rock and roll singer songwriters around anymore, then Matt May’s Once Upon a Hell of a Time will be just the fix you’re looking for. It’s just a good old-fashioned rock and roll record from a guy who’s been doing it since the late 90’s. We picked Canadian raconteur Matt Mays’ new album as our November Rock Record of the Month because we love everything this guy has done and we think you will too. This amazing double album is a great starting point for a deep dive into Mays’ discography, and is pressed on clear vinyl, with cover artwork designed by Canadian illustrator Ola Volo (also the name of track 10 and one of the strongest songs on the album).

November 2017 Alternative ROTM - Weezer - Pacific Daydream

Weezer has released 11 studio albums. Pacific Daydream, their newest LP, recorded with producer Butch Walker (Fall Out Boy, Taylor Swift) is set apart in a whole new league, feeling like the crisply beat-powered spawn of Maroon 5 and Twenty One Pilots.   Pacific Daydream is the eleventh studio album by American rock band Weezer in 25 years. The secret to their longevity isn't that big of a secret, rather a must needed component in today's musical landscape, reinventing themselves to stay relevant.
