Geese’s Projector (2021) is a tense, restless debut built around angular post-punk guitars, wiry rhythms, and Cameron Winter’s theatrical, slightly detached vocals. The album was recorded while the Brooklyn band were still teenagers, and that youth comes through in its combination of ambition, anxiety, swagger, and uncertainty.

The record draws heavily from the lineage of New York post-punk and art rock, with echoes of Talking Heads, Television, The Strokes, and other guitar-driven bands, but Geese push those influences into something more frantic and unpredictable. Songs can shift suddenly from tight grooves into noisy, expansive instrumental passages, giving the album a nervous, almost cinematic momentum.

Lyrically, Projector is concerned with young adulthood, alienation, relationships, city life, spirituality, and anxiety about the future. Winter described the lyrics as coming partly from the “city-induced anxiety” he felt at the time, alongside subjects like climate change, romance, and spirituality.

Tracks such as “Rain Dance,” “Low Era,” “Fantasies / Survival,” “Disco,” and the title track show different sides of the band: frantic post-punk, danceable grooves, sprawling guitar explorations, and darker introspection.

In short: Projector sounds like five extremely young musicians trying to absorb the entire history of New York rock at once—restless, ambitious, messy, cerebral, and bursting with energy. Its imperfections are part of its appeal: it feels less like a finished statement than the sound of a band discovering what it could become.
