Inspired by the "empty chair" therapy technique, frontwoman Julia Steiner wrote much of the album as an imagined dialogue with someone no longer present in her life, giving the record an intimate and deeply personal emotional core.
Musically, the album beautifully blends indie rock, alt-country, Midwest emo, and dream-pop. Produced by former Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Chris Walla, Singin' to an Empty Chair balances shimmering guitars, warm acoustic textures, expansive arrangements, and moments of breathtaking restraint.
