Bark at the Moon is the third solo studio album by Ozzy Osbourne. Released in November 1983 in the US (Nov 14) and shortly after in the UK (December 2). It was the first Ozzy album to feature guitarist Jake E. Lee, following the death of Randy Rhoads. Also the only studio album with drummer Tommy Aldridge. The genre steers more toward heavy metal, but with more synths and a more polished, somewhat pop-metal production than his earlier, rawer work. 

📈 Commercial Performance & Reception

  • The album peaked at #19 on the US Billboard 200.

  • It achieved Gold certification in the US within weeks of release; over time it sold well, crossing several million copies.

  • Certified Silver in the UK.

⚡ Artistic Notes & Highlights

  • The title track “Bark at the Moon” became one of Ozzy’s signature songs, including his first music video. 

  • The lyrical and thematic content leans into horror / supernatural imagery, werewolf / beast myths, which synced well with Ozzy’s image. 

  • Jake E. Lee’s guitar work brought a new energy and style post-Rhoads; while some controversy exists over songwriting credits (Lee and Bob Daisley have claimed substantial writing input despite official credits being Ozzy’s alone).
