Deer Tick - Coin-O-Matic
Deer Tick's Coin-O-Matic is a deeply Providence, Rhode Island record—part roots-rock barroom storyteller, part Americana character study, and part reflection on getting older, losing people and watching the places you grew up with disappear.
The album takes its title from Coin-O-Matic, the cigarette-vending-machine company associated with Providence mob boss Raymond Patriarca. That local history becomes a jumping-off point for songs populated by working-class characters, Catholic guilt, old neighborhoods, crime, loss and nostalgia.
It's also a significant record for the band because Deer Tick self-produced an album for the first time, recording much of it in their home state. The result is less polished and radio-oriented than the Dave Fridmann-produced Emotional Contracts (2023), instead leaning into a warm, lived-in Americana sound with echoes of heartland rock, Southern rock and classic roots music.
