Caamp - Copper Changes Color

Caamp - Copper Changes Color

With Copper Changes Color, Caamp takes a bold step into a looser, more confident iteration of themselves. Recorded over two years at Sonic Ranch and Sear Sound, the album bears the fingerprints of co-producers Beatriz Artola and Tucker Martine, whose contributions help shape its dynamic, textured soundscape.

Unlike their more polished folk of Lavender Days (2022), the five members of Caamp—Taylor Meier, Evan Westfall, Matt Vinson, Joe Kavalec, and Nicholas Falk—embrace a ragged swagger this time around. The opening track, “Millions,” immediately signals this shift: raw, jangly, reminiscent of early Kings of Leon’s youthful roar, but with Caamp’s own melodic soulfulness at its core.

That edginess peeks through on “Mistakes,” a strummy, last-call rocker infused with the gritty energy of New York’s Lower East Side—Meier spent time immersing himself in that scene, and the influence shows. Yet even as the band leans into this newfound rawness, their tender side remains intact. “Fairview Feeling” is a reflective, intimate ballad, proof that introspection is still very much at the heart of their songwriting.

Lyricist Meier hints at a deeper metaphor woven throughout the album: “Take your rings off and wash your hands. Wrap something tightly in newspaper; give it away. Water is running and Copper Changes Color.” It’s indicative of transition, shedding the old, and letting something new—like copper—change its hue.

At 35+ minutes long, the 11-track offering is compact and punchy, underscored by musical and emotional growth. Billboard even notes that Copper Changes Color enters the Billboard 200, affirming that Caamp’s evolution is resonating beyond their loyal folk base.
