With Howl, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club took a sharp turn away from the distortion-heavy garage rock that defined their early albums. Instead, the band embraced American roots music—blues, folk, gospel, country, and acoustic rock—while maintaining the dark, rebellious spirit that made them stand out in the first place.

Released in 2005, Howl was a bold reinvention. After the brooding fuzz and feedback of B.R.M.C. and Take Them On, On Your Own, Peter Hayes, Robert Levon Been, and Nick Jago stripped things back. Acoustic guitars, harmonicas, handclaps, gospel-style vocals, and raw blues replaced much of the wall of noise.

The result is an album that sounds both old and timeless. Howl draws inspiration from American folk and blues traditions while filtering them through BRMC's unmistakable sense of darkness and urgency.
