B.T.R.C's Best Vinyl of 2022
Every year between November and January, every cultural, entertainment, and music publication looks back over the previous year and puts together its very own staff and journalist-curated "End of Year" (EOY) lists. Magazines like Rolling Stone, Uncut, Mojo, Billboard, Paste, American Songwriter, Under the Radar, Slant, Spin, Pitchfork , and many more. News and cultural periodicals like The Guardian, NPR, The Atlantic, the BBC, Entertainment Weekly, People, Time, USA Today, and so many more, all post their own EOY list. Most of you have probably been receiving emails and social media notices since early December with links to some pretty exhaustive lists, covering every genre and style of music under the sun. At Blind Tiger Record Club, we always wait until New Year's Eve (this year, a little later) to give you our final Top albums list. We curate our list by using a specific list of rules to narrow down our selections: If this is your first year reading our list, here are the selection parameters we use that will help give context to our list.
- First, our list only considers music released on Vinyl. There are several projects that appear at the top of many other "Best Of" lists that we did not consider because they were not released on vinyl in 2022.
- Second, in the past, although the albums were all chosen based on the music, we did use some of the aesthetic qualities such as album weight, multiple disc presentation, color variant, and album art to separate any close picks for the lists. We DID NOT do that this year. Its all about the music baby!
- Thirdly, while we do choose many of these titles from our previous curated efforts throughout the year, this list goes way beyond our B.T.R.C. Record of the Month program.
- Fourth, we started with 112 Albums for Round One! This initial round of voting has the artist and albums categorized by the club's style rules or general music genres. This round pares the list down to 30 Albums. In Round TWO, We invite artists and guests that have appeared on the podcast over the last couple of years to vote for their favorite albums from the new list of 30 albums. This gives us the TOP 20 ALBUMS for our Blind Tiger Record Club's Best Vinyl of 2022!
We also end every season of the Blind Tiger Record Club Podcast with a "best of" show and on January 23rd, 2023, we wrap up Season 5 with a discussion of the Blind Tiger Record Club's Best Vinyl of 2022. Our full panel of B.T.R.C. hosts, David W. Williams, Kevin Lee, and newcomer Jonathan Hibma will discuss the top albums from our final "Top 20" list, counting down the Top 10 releases of 2022 along with some of our personal picks that may, or may not, made it to the top.
