All Them Witches - House of Mirrors

All Them Witches - House of Mirrors

After more than five years away from the studio, Nashville's All Them Witches return with House of Mirrors, their seventh full-length album and first release for BMG. The record follows 2020's Nothing as the Ideal and finds the quartet digging even deeper into the band's trademark combination of psychedelic atmosphere, heavy blues, Southern rock and hypnotic hard rock.

The title is fitting: House of Mirrors feels like a reflection of the band's many musical influences, drawing from vintage psychedelic rock, British blues, folk, doom and the sprawling improvisational tradition of American rock. The result isn't simply a retro exercise, though—the band uses those ingredients to create something distinctly their own, moving effortlessly between crushing distortion and spacious, meditative passages.

The album opens with a six-and-a-half-minute interpretation of the Appalachian folk song “Red Rocking Chair,” immediately establishing the record's darker, roots-oriented character. From there, All Them Witches move through heavy riffing, organ-driven rock, bluesy grooves and more atmospheric material. “Starting Line,” in particular, uses dramatic shifts between quieter and heavier sections, while “The Welterweight” brings a more narrative, folksy quality to the album.
